Growing Greenwich

GCDA have been supporting food growing projects in Greenwich since 2003 and in October 2009 launched Growing Greenwich.

Growing Greenwich is an exciting new partnership supporting food growing and training, aiming to give people the skills and knowledge to grow their own food in an urban environment.  This is funded by the Local Food Fund, Greenwich NHS and Trust Thamesmead and is Local Food Beacon Project.

Growing Greenwich aims to create an inner city model of best practice for local food growing and distribution. The main aim is to create access to training in food growing and food growing projects for every Greenwich resident and ensure projects are established upon principles of sustainability.

Growing Greenwich provides training in Schools, Community Centres, Residential Homes, Housing Estates, Community Gardens and specialist training for Disadvantaged Communities.

Growing Greenwich provides ongoing support for existing food growing projects including Allotments, Community Gardens, Schools, Community Centres and specialist projects for people with Learning Difficulties and people with Mental Health difficulties.

All new food growing sites are encouraged to register with Capital Growth

 Growing Greenwich offers the following courses:

1.    Urban Food Growing Talk;   An introductory talk on the principles and the practice of urban food growing.

2.    3 Hour bespoke training Sessions;  An introduction with practical demonstration delivered to any community group or setting, school, hospital care setting, residential homes or housing estate.

3.    6 week short course;  6x3hr sessions to cover the skills required to grow your own food, including choosing what to grow, where, planning your food growing project, plant maintenance, harvesting, watering, composting and sustainability

4.    Train the trainer food growing course ; This course is for community leaders, teachers and those who want to teach food growing. It will cover all the elements of delivery of food growing courses, best teaching practices and provide the opportunity for people to deliver food growing training in their community.
