On Thursday 9th October 2008, the Staff Team from GCDA, set out on an epic journey through terrible traffic to the ancient woodland on shooters hill. In a clearing past a farm is a secret garden with some magical beds. Davey, thirsty from his exhausting travels, wanted some refreshing tea to rejuvenate, but alas, the more energetic staff were hungry for work and not succour.

We had grand plans; steps, path, handrail and fence. Planting up beds with salads and herbs. First we discussed the mission ahead, how do we go about making steps. We needed to craft out of wood, some stakes to drive into the heart of the earth. We needed to dig trenches, break stones, cut and hammer.

We split up into teams, the bravest pushing their way to the front. There was Claire, like Thor with iron hammer in hand. Meera, Mel and Matt ready to cut their way through any dangers ahead. Sergio fighting a strange animal with 240 teeth! Andrea, Symone and Lorraine keeping a look out for any vampires armed just with sharpened stakes! We toiled for an hour or more, the sweat pouring from our brows. After helping Meera and Symone plant a bed with magic salad seeds, Davey came to look at the progress “What just TWO steps”. He cracked the whip, and everyone cringed. “Work harder and faster”. Matt and Lorraine, planted the next bed being taught by Meera the wise. The others managed two more steps in the next half hour! Davey never did get a cup of tea! But everyone had a good time and wished we could carry on.

341 shooters hill has been growing food and delivering training for adults with learning difficulties for the past 5 years. It is one of the biggest projects of it’s kind.
