Healthy Greenwich Network
Greenwich CDA has been a partner in the
Healthy Greenwich Network
since October 2002. (The other partners are
Age Concern,
Volunteers Greenwich and
Greenwich Teaching Primary Care Trust. The Healthy Greenwich
Network is a Healthy Living Centre (HLC), originally funded by the National Lottery, SRB6 and Neighbourhood
Renewal and currently funded by Greenwich Teaching Primary Care Trust. The idea behind the creation of
HLC’s was that individuals and communities would be encouraged to work in partnership with private and
public sector organisations to establish projects that help them to improve their own health.
The Healthy Greenwich Network continues to be a vibrant cross-sector partnership
improving health and reducing inequalities across Greenwich. Greenwich Council’s Healthy Communities Unit
is the accountable body for the funding and monitoring of HGN, but since its
beginning HGN has had a steering group made up of project partners to agree the aims and objectives of the
network. In January 2007 HGN submitted their
fourth Annual Report to the Big Lottery Fund, which confirmed the network delivered services to nearly
20,000 residents in that year and has so far engaged over 500 volunteers.
The HGN received recognition from various award bodies including being a finalist in The Sustainable
Communities Award 2006 under the Healthy Communities Category and was highly commended. It was also a
finalist in the 2006 Municipal Journal Achievements Award.
In February 2008 the London Borough of Greenwich were awarded two Beacon Awards, one for Tackling
Health Inequality, and the HGN Community Needs assessment and Greenwich community food co-ops were
recognised by the awarding body as contributing to Beacon status.
The HGN project at GCDA encompasses the Greenwich Community
Food Initiative and the Community Health Needs Assessment.
