Seasonality Mat and Cards
This is a practical activity to stimulate discussion around seasonality. Using a large floor mat and food picture cards this activity really gets people thinking about what ‘seasonal food’ means in a world where we’re used to buying foods from around the globe all through the year. It helps re-connect people to food and its origins and helps people understand the potential benefits of eating more seasonably.
The resource comes with detailed background reading notes and a session plan meaning you don’t need a full understanding of the issues at hand in order to use it effectively.
The mat can be used as a stand-alone promotional tool to encourage seasonal eating, or can be used as an activity in any session based on food or cooking.
This is also a very valuable tool in promoting and supporting the ‘5 a day’ or ‘eat more veg’ campaigns.

‘Why School Lunchtime Matters’ Mat and Cards
Lunchtimes are viewed very differently by different sectors of people. The catering teams have budgetary and legal constraints dictating much of what they can buy and make; teachers may see it as a break from the kids; the kids probably see it as a time to socialise and play with their friends. Often these differing view points can lead to conflict and misunderstandings that exacerbate any existing problems. The aims of this activity are to highlight some of these issues and show participants how lunchtime may be viewed by other people within the school, emphasising empathy and understanding. This activity demonstrates how good customer service plays a vital role in the school lunch experience and achieving a financially viable food service.
The pack comes with large floor mat and ‘statement cards’ that participants place on the mat depending on who they think the statement applies to. Also included are detailed trainer notes and background reading.
