The Bengali Workers Association
The Bengali Workers Association (BWA) was formed in 1996 to provide a range of services to the Bengali and other Asian communities in London
Borough of Greenwich. Their services support employment matters, cultural and literary events, Bengali
heritage music (traditional, devotional, folk and classical) and language to second generation Bengali children.
Realising a lack of Bengali learning materials for students, Mrs Hosne Ara Begum, a leading member of the BWA
and a former school teacher, produced a text book entitled "Esho Bangla Porhi" ("Lets Learn
Bengali"). GCDA made successful funding applications to
The South-East Co-op Community Dividend Fund,
and Awards for All, a Lottery grants scheme for local communities in the UK to raise money for the publication
of this book.
With this funding BWA printed an initial run of 500 copies which were distributed within a four month
period. The book won important recognition from and the Bengali press and had a public launch at The Stepney
Green School in Tower Hamlets. Following this interest a further successful funding application was awarded
for a larger print run of a revised edition which is now published on a commercial basis.
The author was awarded the Millennium Award, a scheme set up in 1996 to give Lottery grants to individuals and
a trophy from the Brick Lane Housing and Community Trust of London.
More details are available from BWA, 78 Ceres Road, Plumstead, London SE18 1HL.
